Supine Spinal Twist
Supta Matsyendrasana
Lower one or both bent knees across the body while reclining with the arms open.
Supta means reclining; Matsyendra refers to the lord of the fishes.
Movement guidance
Preparation
Lie on the back with knees bent and arms open to the sides.
Entry and alignment
Slowly lower the knees to one side. Support them if the opposite shoulder lifts excessively.
Hold and breathe
Do not force both the knees and opposite shoulder to touch the floor. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.
Exit and next movement
Gently support the abdomen and bring the knees to center. Rest the feet or repeat on the other side.
Easier variations and preparation
Place a cushion beneath the lowered knees to reduce rotation.
Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
