Side Lunge

Skandasana

Bend one knee into a deep side lunge while the other leg extends sideways with its heel grounded and toes lifted.

Named after Skanda; this entry uses the Side Lunge form.

The photograph shows hands at the chest. Floor-supported hands can help balance.

Movement guidance

  1. Preparation

Stand wide, lean forward with hands on the floor or blocks, and turn the bending-side toes slightly outward in line with the knee.

  2. Entry and alignment

Shift toward one foot and bend that knee. Extend the other leg sideways with the heel grounded and toes up. Bring the hands together at the chest only when steady.

  3. Hold and breathe

Keep the bent knee aligned with the toes and support through that sole and the opposite heel. Do not lock the extended knee or force the pelvis lower. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.

  4. Exit and next movement

Place the hands down, gradually straighten the bent knee, and shift to center. Repeat on the other side, then narrow the stance.

Easier variations and preparation

Keep the pelvis higher, bend less, and leave both hands supported.

Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
