Standing Forward Bend

Uttanasana

Hinge at the hips to fold your torso toward your legs. Rest your hands on the floor or shins. Bend your knees if your back rounds strongly, bringing your abdomen closer to your thighs.

ut (intense) + tana (stretch) → Intense Forward Stretch.

Movement guidance

  1. Preparation

Stand with parallel feet and soft knees.

  2. Entry and alignment

Fold from your hips and place your hands on the floor or supports. Bend your knees as needed to reduce the space between your abdomen and thighs.

  3. Hold and breathe

Begin the fold at the hips rather than leading with the head. Do not lock your knees. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.

  4. Exit and next movement

Place your hands on your shins or hips and lengthen your back. Bend your knees slightly, press through your feet and rise.

Easier variations and preparation

Bend your knees generously and rest your hands on blocks or shins.

Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
