Compass Pose

Parivrtta Surya Yantrasana

Extend a raised leg beside the shoulder while opening the chest into a side bend.

Parivrtta means revolved; surya means sun; yantra means instrument. Commonly called Compass Pose.

The basic form uses a direct foot hold. Do not pull the leg upward with the arm.

Movement guidance

  1. Preparation

Sit with one leg comfortably folded. Bring the other bent knee high beside the same shoulder.

  2. Entry and alignment

Hold the outside of the raised foot with the opposite hand overhead. Support the body with the other hand and gradually extend the knee.

  3. Hold and breathe

Do not push on the neck or collapse the torso to place the leg. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.

  4. Exit and next movement

Bend the raised knee, release the foot, and lower the leg from the shoulder.

Easier variations and preparation

Keep the knee bent or use a strap.

Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
