Tortoise Pose

Kurmasana

Fold forward between wide legs with the arms passing beneath the thighs.

Kurma means tortoise.

Movement guidance

  1. Preparation

Sit with the legs apart and knees bent. Leave room for the arms beneath the thighs.

  2. Entry and alignment

Lower the chest and slide the arms sideways, extending the legs only as comfortable.

  3. Hold and breathe

Do not force the arms underneath or use body weight to press the back down. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.

  4. Exit and next movement

Bend the knees first, free the arms, then lift the torso.

Easier variations and preparation

Use a supported wide-legged forward fold with bent knees.

Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
