High Crescent Lunge
Asta Candrasana
Bend the front knee and lift the back heel in an upright lunge with both arms overhead.
Asta means eight; candra means moon. Used as a name for High Crescent Lunge.
The photograph shows the basic arms-up form with the back heel lifted, without a deep backbend or twist. Support differs from Low Lunge and Warrior I.
Movement guidance
Preparation
From a hands-supported lunge, place the front foot between the hands and keep the feet on two hip-width tracks with the back heel lifted.
Entry and alignment
Bend the front knee toward the toes and lengthen the back leg. Once steady, lift the torso and arms with palms facing.
Hold and breathe
Control the front knee above the ankle and press through the ball of the back foot. Face the pelvis forward without over-arching or lifting the front ribs. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.
Exit and next movement
Lower the arms and place the hands beside the front foot. Lower the back knee to rest or step back to all fours.
Easier variations and preparation
Shorten the stance and keep the hands on the hips. Ground the back knee to practice arm lifting if balance is difficult.
Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
