Half Lotus Pose

Ardha Padmasana

Sit with the top of one foot on the opposite thigh and the other leg comfortably folded. The knees may be at different heights. Rotate from the hip rather than pulling the foot and twisting the knee.

ardha (half) + padma (lotus) → Half Lotus Pose.

Movement guidance

  1. Preparation

Sit with legs forward and check the comfortable range of rotation at your hips.

  2. Entry and alignment

Bend one knee and place the foot on the opposite thigh. Support the foot and knee together with your hands, and cross the other leg comfortably.

  3. Hold and breathe

Use hip rotation to position the foot instead of pulling on it. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.

  4. Exit and next movement

Support the upper foot and knee together as you lift the foot off your thigh. Release your legs forward one at a time.

Easier variations and preparation

Sit comfortably cross-legged without placing a foot on the opposite thigh.

Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
