Half Lord of the Fishes Pose

Ardha Matsyendrasana

Turn toward an upright knee while keeping the pelvis grounded and the spine tall.

Ardha means half; Matsyendra refers to the lord of the fishes and the yogi of that name.

Movement guidance

  1. Preparation

Fold one leg beside the opposite hip and place the other foot outside the bent knee.

  2. Entry and alignment

Lengthen the spine and rotate toward the upright knee.

  3. Hold and breathe

Avoid levering hard against the knee or leading only with the neck. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.

  4. Exit and next movement

Release the arms, unwind, and extend the legs one at a time.

Variations and sequence transitions

Choose variations and transitions within your comfortable range.

Purna Matsyendrasana · Lotus-leg twist

A deep seated twist with one leg in Lotus. Do not force a greater hip range than in Half Lord of the Fishes.

Easier variations and preparation

Keep the bottom leg straight and gently hug the upright knee.

Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
