Sphinx Pose

Salamba Bhujangasana

Support the chest on the forearms in a gentle prone backbend.

Salamba means supported; bhujanga means cobra.

Movement guidance

  1. Preparation

Lie face down with forearms parallel and elbows beneath or slightly ahead of the shoulders.

  2. Entry and alignment

Press the forearms down and lengthen the chest forward.

  3. Hold and breathe

Keep the pelvis and legs grounded, the neck long, and the shoulders lifted away from collapse. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.

  4. Exit and next movement

Lower the chest, move the elbows outward, and rest the forehead on stacked hands.

Easier variations and preparation

Move the elbows farther forward to reduce the backbend.

Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
