Yogic Sleep Pose
Yoganidrasana
Lie on the back with both legs folded behind the head and ankles crossed.
Yoga means yoga; nidra means sleep. The name describes a deep folded shape.
This advanced posture needs direct guidance. It is distinct from the reclining meditation practice Yoga Nidra and is not a prolonged resting pose.
Movement guidance
Preparation
Check a comfortable range in supine hip preparations without pulling the knees or neck.
Entry and alignment
This deep hip fold places both legs behind the shoulders. Do not use the neck to push the legs into place.
Hold and breathe
Do not pull the neck or knees to bring the legs behind the head. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.
Exit and next movement
Support the legs with the hands, uncross one ankle at a time, and bring the knees forward before lowering the feet.
Easier variations and preparation
Prepare comfortably in Happy Baby.
This advanced variation requires support and range of motion. Check preparation and exit with a teacher when first learning.
Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
