Visvamitra's Pose
Visvamitrasana
Support a raised leg on the upper arm and hold the foot overhead in a side-opening balance.
Named after the sage Visvamitra.
The photograph shows Half Visvamitra with the lower knee grounded; its support differs from the full form.
Movement guidance
Preparation
Begin with the lower knee grounded in side support and support the front leg with a hand.
Entry and alignment
Rest the front leg on the supporting upper arm, hold the foot with the opposite hand, and extend it while opening the chest. Keep the lower knee grounded.
Hold and breathe
Establish lower-shoulder and foot support before pulling with the upper hand. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.
Exit and next movement
Bend the raised knee, release and lower the foot, then place the upper hand down and return to knee support.
Variations and sequence transitions
Choose variations and transitions within your comfortable range.
Visvamitrasana · Full form
Extend the front leg over the upper arm and hold the foot with the other hand while opening sideways. The lower knee is lifted, unlike the main Half Visvamitra photograph.
Easier variations and preparation
Prepare in knees-down Side Plank.
This advanced variation requires support and range of motion. Check preparation and exit with a teacher when first learning.
