Seated Mountain Pose

Parvatasana

Reach the arms overhead from a stable seat and lengthen both sides of the torso.

Parvata means mountain; the name is also used for other shapes.

The photograph shows an arms-up kneeling seat. Lotus is optional; different forms share this name.

Movement guidance

  1. Preparation

Sit upright on the heels or a support.

  2. Entry and alignment

Interlace the fingers, turn the palms upward, and lift the arms without shrugging.

  3. Hold and breathe

Keep the pelvis level and avoid lifting the front ribs as the arms rise. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.

  4. Exit and next movement

Lower the arms, release the fingers, and use the hands to unfold the legs.

Easier variations and preparation

Sit on a chair if kneeling is uncomfortable and lift the arms less.

Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
