Formidable Pose
Bhairavasana
Combine a leg-behind-head position with a side arm balance and the free arm reaching upward.
Bhairava refers to a formidable form of Shiva.
Do not apply the basic Side Plank exit to this compound variation. Also known as Kala Bhairavasana.
This entry explains preparation and movement characteristics. It does not provide a complete practice procedure for the advanced photographed variation. Learn entry and exit directly with a teacher.
Movement guidance
Preparation
Prepare leg-behind-head placement and side support separately with a teacher.
Understanding the movement
This combines deep hip movement and a sideways hand-supported balance with one leg behind the head.
Hold and breathe
Do not force the leg placement and one-hand balance simultaneously. Keep breathing comfortably without holding your breath.
Exit and next movement
Learn how to release both the leg and body weight directly with a teacher.
Easier variations and preparation
Omit the leg-behind-head position and prepare with knee-supported side balance.
This advanced variation requires support and range of motion. Check preparation and exit with a teacher when first learning.
Difficulty refers to the photographed form. Individual experience may differ.
